Science Lesson Plan

Subject: Science
Topic: Unit 14 - Our Body System
Sub topic: C. The Breathing System
Level: Primary 4
Class Size: 20 Pupils

OVERVIEW: This lesson is about the human breathing system. How it functions and what is involved when we breathe in and out.

Content: The Breathing system is one of many working systems in the human body and is composed of various parts and organs, each with its own function.

Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, student will be able to:

1. List out the parts of the body that are related to breathing.
2. Describe the process of breathing.
3. Identify and explain the functions of the human breathing system.
4. Label out the part of the breathing system.

Resources and Materials:

-Interactive White Board
- Model or transparency of the human breathing system

Activities and Procedures:

Set Induction:

The teacher will instruct the pupils to sit in groups of 2. Assuming that all pupils are present there would be 10 groups of pupils. To spark the pupils’ interest and curiosity about the subject matter, the teacher would tell the pupils to place their hands on their chest. The teacher would then tell the pupils to breathe in and out. The pupils would breathe in and out a couple of times and then the teacher would ask them if they could feel their chest move up and down. Almost definitely all the pupils will say yes to this question.

After answering the question the teacher would then ask the pupils what makes their chest move up and down when they breathe. The high ability pupils may be able to answer with answers like air, lungs or oxygen. The teacher would then explain to the pupils that ‘Air’ is the element that makes our chest move up and down.

Lesson Introduction

-Teacher presents model or transparency of the human breathing system and explains that it is just one of many working systems in the human body.

-The teacher would explain to the pupils the main parts of the breathing system such as the windpipe, the lungs and the blood vessels. The teacher would explain to the pupils the structure of the breathing system and the functions of each part as air flows through the breathing tract. Further explanation would be identifying how oxygen and carbon dioxide is exchanged in the lungs and talking about how important the breathing system is to our body.

-Teacher will ask pupils to go to http://science.nationalgeographic.com/science/health-and-human-body/human-body/lungs-article.html to show the student how the process of breathing works and more explanation on the functions of the human breathing system.

Assessment:
As class work the pupils will identify and label on the interactive whiteboard, the main part of the breathing system.

Home Work:
For homework they will be given a handout with 2 sections. The first section will be ‘Fill in the blanks’ and the second section will be ‘Labelling the main part of the breathing system’.

Closure:
Conclude and recap the lesson given to them as well as given the pupils homework. An oral questioning session would be done with questions like:-
• Names the parts of the body that are related to breathing.
• What they understand about the breathing system.
• How the breathing system work on our body.
